Senator Janet Nguyen to run for Orange County Supervisor

Huntington Beach, CA - - Today, State Senator Janet Nguyen announced her decision to run for Orange County Supervisor in the First District in 2024. Janet Nguyen currently represents the entire First Supervisor District in the State Senate.

“After giving it a great deal of thought and prayer, I have decided to run for Supervisor in the First District, my home and the Supervisor District I represented from 2007 to 2014. The Board of Supervisors is where decisions are made that have a direct impact on our quality of life. From crime, homelessness, the cost of living, traffic congestion, health care, to keeping our beaches clean and more, the Board is where problems can be solved,” said Senator Janet Nguyen.

“For the last several months I have heard from constituents and community leaders from throughout the First District who have urged me to return to the Board of Supervisors,” said Senator Janet Nguyen. “I share their frustration with the super-majority in Sacramento and its misguided priorities and have always believed that the most effective government is the one closest to the people.”

Community leaders and elected officials in the First District reacted with enthusiasm upon hearing of Senator Janet Nguyen’s decision, including Garden Grove Councilwoman Stephanie Klopfenstein, who said: "Sacramento has proven to be incapable of fixing what's wrong in California and the super-majority in the Legislature is not interested in our problems here in Orange County. We need our best, brightest and most experienced problem-solvers working right here at home. That's why I urged Senator Janet Nguyen to run for Supervisor."

The First Supervisorial District has a +2.5% Republican registration edge. In her 2022 Senate campaign, Janet won inside the First District by a margin of 56% to 41%. Janet Nguyen was overwhelmingly elected to the State Senate in 2022. Janet is a small-business owner, a former State Assemblymember, former Orange County Supervisor, and former Garden Grove City Councilmember. She is the former Vice-President of Government and Public Affairs for a local Chamber of Commerce.

Janet Nguyen has been named Legislator of the Year by the American Legion, the Association of the United States Army and the Vietnam Veterans of America. She was named “Champion of Manufacturing” by the California Manufacturers and Technology Association and “Elected Official of the Year” by the American Council of Engineering Companies for her work to protect jobs. Janet Nguyen received top ratings from California’s leading taxpayer groups and small business organizations, including the Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Association and California Taxpayers Association.

Janet is known for her “firsts.” She is the first Vietnamese-American elected to the State Senate in the nation, was the first woman Supervisor to represent the First District, the first Asian-American and the first Vietnamese-American to serve on the Board of Supervisors, as well as the youngest Supervisor elected in Orange County history.

Born in Saigon, Vietnam, Senator Janet Nguyen and her family escaped communism on a small wooden 10-meter boat sailing across the South East Asia Sea in search of freedom. After passing through numerous refugee camps, Janet and her family arrived in California in 1981. She is a graduate of the University of California, Irvine. She has lived in the district for over 30 years and currently resides in Huntington Beach with her husband, Tom, and two sons.
